The French-Basque coast
From the border town of Hendaye up to the commercial city of Bayonne there are many places worth to visit, each of them charmer than the previous one. But what is really a surprise is how different is this area from “its sister” on the other side of the frontier.
We start going to Hendaye, on the Bay of Txingudi, just in the opposite side of Hondarribia. There is the beach Ondarraitz, which is nearly 3 kilometres long. At the end of the beach we find the famous “Twins”, two huge rocks which seem to be keeping an eye on you while swimming in the sea.
If we keep going up north along the coast towards Saint-Jean de-Luz, we pass by Socoa and Ciboure, small fishing villages full of charm and with astonishing beaches.
Saint-Jean de-Luz is probably one of the most picturesque places on that side of the border. It is a small famous fishing village
Following the road that goes north towards Biarritz, we will pass by Guéthary and Bidart, well known in the old days for whale fishing. Nevertheless, at present they are rather quiet villages where you can enjoy the beach and surf.
Biarritz, the most cosmopolitan town in the whole of the French-Basque Coast, is also famous for being a meeting point for surf lovers. It is worth visiting the Casino, the Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea), the Imperial Chapel and the already mentioned, Hotel du Palais.
